Household Gods

Client: Oliver Beer

Role: Consultancy; instrument design; hardware/software programming; tuning the installation.

“The “Household Gods” of the title are physical objects, placed on plinths in a whitened room and idolized to the point where they can sing. In the main space of the gallery, they are given voice and raised to the status of household divinities. Beer uses microphones to amplify the ambient sound ricocheting within the internal spaces of the objects, creating gentle acoustic feedback loops, that allow us to hear the innate sound of each object. These notes are determined by volume and form of empty space, and have remained unchanged since the day each piece was created.

Reflecting the omnipresent tradition of animism and pan-cultural reverence to objects, Beer acoustically invests his unique collection with a spirit. Encouraging aural interaction with each object’s histories, the installation gives rise to a complex narrative of cultural assimilation, appropriation and access.

Chosen by the artist for their specific musical resonances, their harmonies represent invisible but unmistakable relationships between the objects. An Arita Amsterdams Bont urinal sings its inherent note, humorously referencing Duchamp's Fountain, 1917. Imported white from Japan and stylised by its Dutch owner to match the tastes associated with the burgeoning empire, it speaks to colonial politics and the articulation of power in aesthetic form. This is brought into musical harmony with a remnant of a chimney purportedly salvaged from the Palace of Westminster following the destructive fire of 1834, inside which the hand marks of the child labourers who made it are still visible. A tiny pot in the shape of the Egyptian divinity Bes, from 4th-1st century BC, adds its high descant of a high B♭.”

Beholder

Client: United Visual Artists

Role: Sound Designer and Audio Programmer

Virtual Reality (VR) art installation at Birmingham Open Media gallery:

“Commissioned by BOM, Beholder seeks to re-evaluate our perception of beauty, to see it through another’s eyes. The work centres around the wonder of everyday phenomena as seen through the eyes of an autistic child, Oliver, alongside wider autistic perspectives. Oliver is the son of Matt Clark, founder and director of UVA, who has worked with his team at UVA to create the artwork.

Beholder continues UVA’s investigations into experiences that transcend the physical, and question the relativity of experience. It inquires into our ability to process very detailed information at the expense of altering our perception of time and space, a phenomenon often intensified within the autistic spectrum.”

Devils

Client: Oliver Beer

Role: Consultancy and hardware/software programming/ tuning the installation

"In the large gallery space, Devils, a major new acoustic installation work based on Oliver Beer’s recent research at the Watermill Centre, NY, uses a feedback loop technique developed by the artist to reveal the inherent musical notes of various ancient and modern vessels, both sacred and commonplace. The empty space within each vessel has its own unchanging musical note at which it resonates. Oliver Beer has chosen these objects because their resonant frequencies harmonise with each other in augmented fourths. This musical interval, dubbed Diabolus in Musica in the middle ages, is a dissonant combination of notes which was believed by the Catholic Church to be the musical incarnation of the devil; their use by composers was said to be a crime worthy of excommunication." - Gallerie Thaddeus Ropac

Our Time

Client: United Visual Artists www.uva.co.uk

Role: Spatial Audio Design/SuperCollider programming

"Our Time (2016) is the latest large-scale installation by United Visual Artists investigating our subjective experience of the passing of time. How long is a moment? At what rate does time actually pass? The work joins a series of kinetic sculptures that began with Momentum (2013); an installation designed as a 'spatial instrument' that was to reveal the relationship between expectation and perception when intersected with a physical space.

Our Time defines a physical environment where pendulums swing at a pace apparently unhindered by the laws of nature and where no single time measurement applies. The installation combines movement, light and sound as a multi-sensory, multi-dimensional canvas the visitor can enter. Pendulums swing, each to their own rhythm, as time flows through the grid. With light tracing the path and sound its echo, the passing of time becomes almost palpable." (UVA 2016)

Premiered at Sydney Festival 2015

"An installation in the form of a shimmering labyrinth, Inside There Falls invites audiences to individually explore and seek out its secrets. From hidden pathways made of paper, voices emanate from all around and the entwinements of a pair of illusive and elusive dancers may be glimpsed. In this astonishing creation from UK-based artist Mira Calix, the walls literally speak – music, voice and dance converge into a profound and fully immersive experience. Inside There Falls is a space to dream and discover. Visually and aurally sublime, this world premiere features choreography by Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, performances by Sydney Dance Company dancers and Associate Artists and narration by Hayley Atwell."
